Physical Education (PE)

The PE curriculum gives all learners, particularly the most disadvantaged, the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. Through regular physical activity, pupils develop the skills and behaviours needed to lead healthy, active lifestyles both physically and mentally. PE provides opportunities for pupils to exercise, release endorphins, and develop essential social skills through teamwork, cooperation and fair play.

Our curriculum is planned using the key skills from the National Curriculum, broken down into clear, progressive steps from EYFS to Year 6. These bite-size learning objectives ensure teachers can confidently build on prior learning. The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with Dream Big Sport, providing specialist input while remaining fully accessible for delivery by non-specialist class teachers.

The school invests in specialist PE provision through Dream Big Sport to ensure the highest-quality teaching for our pupils. Skills are mapped out from Reception onwards, ensuring progression across all year groups. Skills are taught through a range of sports and activities, delivered by experts. In addition, the school employs an experienced dance teacher to deliver the dance elements of the National Curriculum to a high standard.

To support equality of access, the school provides all children with a PE kit consisting of shorts and a T-shirt. This ensures every pupil can participate in every lesson, regardless of personal circumstances. Beyond curriculum lessons, pupils are encouraged to widen their participation through a range of extra-curricular activities. The school provides children with a range after-school clubs each half term and various staff members provide clubs at breaktimes and lunchtimes so that pupils who cannot stay after school do not miss out. We also attend after school sports competitions.

The school also develops pupil leadership through Health Champions and Sports Leaders. These pupils help promote active lifestyles and organise weekly lunchtime sports challenges.

Swimming was previously taught in Lower Key Stage 2. Currently, Year 6 pupils receive an intensive programme of swimming and water-safety lessons during the summer term to ensure they meet national expectations and develop essential life skills.
